On According to According to Fox Business, Iran’s cryptocurrency reserves could reach $7,7 billion. This figure aligns with Chainalysis analysts’ estimate that Iran’s digital assets were valued at $7,8 billion in 2025.
Around 50% of this amount belonged to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The remaining assets belonged to ordinary Iranians. According to TRM Labs, in 2024, Iranian citizens traded $11,4 billion worth of cryptocurrency, and in 2025, $10 billion.
This is a significant flow that US authorities are trying to combat. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessint announced that his department had frozen nearly $500 million in cryptocurrency linked to the Iranian regime. This includes $344 million in USDT, which the company Tether blocked in two wallets in April. According to analysts, these assets belong to the Central Bank of Iran. Later on Tether filed a lawsuit, demanding return frozen funds.
Tehran is increasingly forced to turn to cryptocurrencies to circumvent Western sanctions. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council announced that a new body, the Strait of Hormuz Authority, will oversee an insurance company that offers bitcoin insurance coverage for cargo ships transiting the strait.
