According to report River, the number of Bitcoin owners in the US has surpassed the number of gold owners. Currently, 50 million Americans own Bitcoin, while about 37 million own gold.
This is a significant difference in investor behavior, especially for an asset that emerged much later than gold. Demand remained strong even during last year’s price decline.
Individuals remain the largest Bitcoin holders. As of December 31, 2025, they held 14,01 million BTC, accounting for 66,7% of the total. However, the ownership structure is beginning to shift.
On According to River, the amount of Bitcoin owned by individuals peaked in 2024, and in 2025, an outflow began, with individuals reducing their holdings by 696,000 BTC. Over the same period, companies increased their balances by 489,000 BTC, funds and ETFs by 205,000 BTC, and governments by 135,000 BTC. Overall, this stable trend indicates that Bitcoin is becoming an increasingly popular financial asset.
Today, 23 countries hold Bitcoin. Last year, five more countries joined this list: Brazil, the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Saudi Arabia, and Taiwan. The Czech National Bank also became the first central bank to include the flagship cryptocurrency in its reserves.
