Investment company Berkshire Hathaway reported a rise in operating profit in the first quarter, and its cash reserves approached $400 billion. According to Investing.com, profit increased by 18% to $11,35 billion from $9,64 billion a year earlier. Several major business units, including insurance, railroads, energy, manufacturing, services, and retail, contributed to the profit growth.
The insurance company’s profit rose 4% to $4,4 billion after results were impacted by the Southern California wildfires last year. However, Geico’s pre-tax underwriting profit declined 35% due to increased claims and marketing expenses.
BNSF Railroad’s profit increased 13% to $1,38 billion. The rail division benefited from increased demand for grain, petroleum products, oilseeds, and refined products during the quarter. Meanwhile, Berkshire Hathaway Energy posted a 2% increase in profit. Profit from manufacturing, services, and retail increased 5% to $3,2 billion.
These are the first results under the leadership of new CEO Greg Abel, who was appointed as Warren Buffett’s successor in 2021.
