- Arthur Hayes won’t believe it Bitcoin-payments when passing through the Strait of Hormuz, until he sees the transaction itself.
- The community reminded him that Bitcoin payments were chosen to bypass sanctions, so Hayes was destined to see nothing.
Iran’s demand for Bitcoin payments from ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz is making the rounds in cryptocurrency and geopolitical circles. Arthur Hayes expresses some skepticism about it.
According to communication According to the Financial Times, vessels transiting the strait are required to pay a $1 per barrel fee in Bitcoin, with payment due within seconds of receiving an email from Iranian authorities. Vessels attempting to transit without permission sent to tankers in the Persian Gulf will be attacked. Currently, between 300 and 400 vessels are waiting to exit the strait.
I will believe that Iran is charging a duty in BTC when I see a transaction involving a vessel paying the duty, wrote Arthur Hayes.
Otherwise, in his view, it would be a mockery of the Western fiat financial system by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Hayes’ skepticism was commented on by one community member:
Wait, isn’t it because they don’t want transactions to be linked to courts? – one user replied, adding that those using Bitcoin transactions will not be shown for calculations, as this will not facilitate sanctions circumvention.
This is a fairly reasonable observation, since traditional finance also doesn’t publish screenshots of any given transaction.
The accuracy of the message and its interpretation as a signal intended to destabilize Western financial markets are still being debated. Unfortunately, given the lack of background information, the discussion is not clarifying the situation.
