Co-founder Ethereum Vitalik Buterin acted at the fourth Web3 Festival in Hong Kong with a major announcement about the second-level ecosystem. The gist of it was that copying Ethereum and its centralization is not a product, but a mistake.
Buterin distinguished between two types of second-tier projects. The first takes Ethereum, scaling it while reducing decentralization. The second begins with studying the actual needs of applications, identifying the off-chain components these applications require beyond the base layer. The type of L2 that doesn’t make sense is when you just take Ethereum, make a copy of it, scale it up 100 times, make it more centralized, and that’s it,” he commented on projects of the first type.
He thus emphasized that meaningful L2 development begins with applications and works backwards.
I think a smart approach to L2 is to analyze applications: what components outside the blockchain they need, what parts they need beyond L1 Ethereum, and then start developing,” Buterin said.
He also outlined what to focus on for further scaling. EthereumThe primary goal is data scaling. During the latest hard fork, Ethereum PeerDAS technology was introduced, significantly improving the network’s ability to publish data to the blockchain. Buterin acknowledged the progress, but cautioned that the work is not yet complete.
The second priority is scaling computing resources, since “scaling computing resources that are part of the network Ethereum, allows different applications to interact with each other, to communicate with each other without the need for intermediaries.”
This interoperability has become one of the defining architectural advantages. EthereumScaling computing resources allows for greater scale rather than fragmenting the ecosystem into isolated networks that cannot communicate effectively.
