The stolen funds were laundered through more than 150 deposit addresses. Fraudsters regularly exploit the Apple App Store, disguising counterfeit apps as official ones to extort money from potential victims. For example, in February 2025, scammers posted a clone of the Nintendo game “Pokémon Yellow” to the app store and sold copies until users complained and the game was removed.
Apple is combating such criminal schemes and removing apps at the request of authorities.
